Training for Milwaukee and Wisconsin teams

Trauma-Informed Care training for Milwaukee and Wisconsin teams

Most of the people your team serves have lived through trauma. Many of the people on your team have too. Trauma-informed care starts there: understanding how trauma shapes what people do, how it shows up in our workplaces, and how it shows up in us. Then it gives you practical ways to respond.

Training at a glance

Format
Virtual anywhere, or in person at your agency. Most of the time goes to practice: real plays, role plays, and small-group discussion.
Duration
A four-hour workshop covers the foundations. Two half-days or two full days leave room for more practice and for looking at your policies and environment.
Group size
Teams of 8 to 25 tend to work best. Larger group? Let us talk about what would fit.
Pricing
Priced for the whole group, not per person. Discounted rates may be available in special circumstances.
Travel
In person across Milwaukee and Waukesha counties, and up to about three hours from Milwaukee. Travel expenses are agreed with you up front.
Follow-up
Boosters and refreshers, plus activities your team can use in regular meetings.
Continuing education
CE credit (CEUs) may be available as an add-on, at an additional cost. Ask us what is possible for your group.

What your team will leave with

  • A better sense of how your own experiences shape the way you work and connect with people
  • An understanding of trauma at both the personal level and the structural level, including how systems and oppression cause harm
  • Practical skills for safer, steadier interactions, especially when things get tense
  • Ways to notice burnout, secondary trauma, and compassion fatigue, and what actually helps
  • Shared language your team can keep using after the training ends

Who it is for

Anyone in a helping role: case managers, peer specialists, therapists, coaches, residential and shelter staff, supervisors, and leadership. It works especially well when a whole team goes through it together. For peer specialists and the people who supervise them, see Peer Support Training.

Shaped around your agency

We talk first about your setting: who walks through your door, what tense moments look like, and what your staff are carrying. Then we shape the examples and practice around that, whether you run a shelter, a recovery program, a housing team, or a human services unit.

Start with a four-hour foundations workshop, or take two half-days or two full days to look at your policies and environment too. We train virtually anywhere, or in person at your agency in Milwaukee and around Wisconsin.

Compassion fatigue and secondary trauma

Hearing hard stories every day changes us. Our burnout prevention training goes deeper on compassion fatigue and secondary traumatic stress.

How it is taught

We go at a pace that feels okay. There’s space to reflect, nobody is pushed to share their own story, and most of the time goes to discussion and practice with situations from your own work. Our trainers bring lived experience and years in community mental health and trauma work: Shaina Buckner has nearly a decade in trauma-informed care, including nonprofit work with survivors of domestic and sexual violence; Tony Gardner trains on trauma, substance use, and peer support; and Brittney Fair has worked in community mental health, shelters, and hospitals.

Follow-up

Boosters and refreshers are available afterward, along with activities your team can use in regular meetings.

Questions teams ask

How long is the training?

A four-hour workshop covers the foundations. Two half-days or two full days leave room for more practice and for looking at your team’s policies and environment.

What does it cost?

Training is priced for the whole group, not per person. Ask us about rates when we talk. Discounted rates may be available in special circumstances, based on the needs of your organization.

How many people can attend?

Teams of 8 to 25 tend to work best. Larger group? Let us talk about what would fit.

Can we do it virtually, or in person?

Virtual anywhere, or in person at your agency. We travel across Milwaukee and Waukesha counties and up to about three hours from Milwaukee, which includes Madison, the Fox Valley, and Green Bay; travel expenses are agreed with you up front.

Is continuing education (CE) credit or CEUs available?

CE credit (CEUs) may be available as an add-on, at an additional cost. Ask us what is possible for your group.

Can you shape it around our team?

Yes. Every training starts with a conversation about who your team serves, what is getting in the way, and what you hope will change. Then we shape the training around that, and stay flexible on length and format.

Let's talk about your team

Tell us a little about your team and share a few times that work. Jesse will email you within two business days to set up a free video chat on Google Meet, usually about 30 minutes, longer if you need it. Bring anyone you’d like.
